Devi Navratri ( Dasara / Dussehra/ Durga Puja / Sarannavaratri)


West India: Navaratri
In Gujarat, both the goddess Durga and lord Rama are revered for their victory over evil. Fasting and prayers at temples are common. A regional dance called Dandiya Raas, that deploys colourfully decorated sticks, and Garba, that is, dancing in traditional dress,is a part of the festivities through the night.

North India:
In most of northern and western India,
Dusshera is celebrated in honour
of Ramas victory in war on Ravana.
Ram leela drama-dance-music plays.
Ravana dahana( burning effigies
of Ravana on bonfire) are major events


Navratri Nine days fasting,Khetri 
an earthen pot filled with sand
at bottom and barley seeds sowed
and germinated,along with puja
is performed in the nine days.It is 
believedbarley was first crop after 
creation of the universe.Hawan , 
kanya puja are also performed.

Navratri Nine days are dedicated to  Durga and
her  avatars – the Navadurga
Shailaputri,Brahmacharini,
Chandraghanta,Kushmanda,
Skandamata,Katyayani,
Kaalaratri,Mahagauri,Siddhidatri
 


South India:

Bathukamma is floral festival celebrated predominantly in Telangana and some parts of Andhra Pradesh which starts a day before Navaratri.The main deity of worship is goddess Gowri, a form of goddess Durga, who is symbolised with a idol made from turmeric powder and is placed on a floral arrangement called bathukamma.
The festival will go for nine nights with women whirling around the bathukamma clapping their hands or sticks along with the recitation of the Ramayana, stories of Shiva, Gowri, Ganga, and common day-to-day life of women in the form of rhythmic songs. Every night, bathukamma is immersed in nearby water resources and a new bathukamma is made next day. This nine nights festival ends with Durgashtami, when Durga is believed to be worshipped in the form of Maha Gowri.
During navaratri and vijaya dashami in Vijayawada Kanaka Durga temple Devi is portrayed in below forms
Annapurna,Bala Tripura Sundari,
Lalita Tripura Sundari, Gayatri, 
Saraswati, Maha Lakshmi , 
Raja Rajeshwari, Mahishasura Mardhini ,
Durga ,Swarna Kawachalankruta Durga.
Many devotees take Bhavani Dheeksha and walk bare foot to durga temple after taking a holy
dipin krishna river. Special pujas are performed, 
the most significant are Saraswati puja and Theppotsavam.
Ayutha Puja perfomed for machinery objects ,vehicles.Sami puja is performed reciting
sloka, it is believed Rama and pandavas performed
 the puja for victory andwatching indian roller after 
Sami puja brings good luck.
Dasara Dolls festival known as 
Bomma Kolu (Tamil) ,Bommala Koluvu(Telugu),
Gombe Habba(Kannada)
The dolls arrangement in levels used to tell 
mythological storiesand stoies part of life .
Families visit each other share festive foods,
and sometimes play music or 
sing devotional songs together.
Mysore Dasara procession and celebrations in Karnataka are a major tourist attraction. A grandeur religious and martial event with royal support.






East India: Durga Puja
The puja is performed at home or in public
the latter featuring a temporary stage and 
structural decorations (known as pandals). 
The festival begins with Mahalaya and ends on the tenth day, also known as Vijayadashami, a great procession and immersion of idols in water bodies and solemn goodbye.
Dhunuchi nritya, or a frenzied dance with the censer, to the accompaniment of feverish dhak rolls is common.
 In Tripura Durgabari , royal family and state government take part in durga puja rituals.

Kumari puja is performed where a girl is worshiped
in the form of devi.Durga puja is also called as
Akaal Bodhan ,it is believedRam performed Durga Puja before killing Ravana
